Berlin's AfD opened its campaign for the September 20 state election with a rally in front of the Red Town Hall on Sunday evening, drawing around 600 supporters while several counter-demonstrations brought together roughly 200 people.

The rally was officially registered for 1,000 participants, but Berlin police said roughly 600 people attended, many of them waving German flags. Around 540 officers were deployed, and police described the event as largely undisturbed. Counter-demonstrations, including representatives of Antifa and the 'Omas gegen Rechts' (Grandmas against the Right) group, drew around 200 participants, according to police figures cited by the dpa news channel.

Berlin's AfD lead candidate Kristin Brinker used the rally to attack the CDU and Governing Mayor Kai Wegner, accusing Wegner of 'Lügereigeschichten' (lies) in connection with a major power outage in southwestern Berlin in early January. 'Das ganze Land lacht über das Tennisgate,' Brinker said, referring to the controversy that erupted after Wegner did not travel to affected areas on the first day of the blackout, played tennis for about an hour around midday, initially concealed the fact, and later faced significant criticism.
